If you're like most individuals, you're probably in debt and are having a hard time making ends meet. Well I feel and hear your pain, there's no doubt about it. Being in debt is no picnic and can cause a host of emotional and physical pain.

Read Joanne’s story…..

Joanne Caulfield, 39, of Mumbles, Swansea, is married to Peter, a civil engineer. They have two children, Lily aged six, and Tom, four.
'When Tom was born with a heart condition, in October 2003, I gave up my job as a buyer for a clothes company to look after him. Halving your income overnight is hard enough. But we hadn't anticipated the expense of illness: constant trips to specialist hospitals, parking and overnight stays.
Our credit card was suddenly in use constantly. We still had a hefty mortgage and the usual bills to pay and took out more loans and cards just to cope.
Peter took extra shifts but still we couldn't keep up. As interest rates rose we fell behind. I had to take loans from family and we just made minimum payments on our debts.
At last, Tom had successful surgery. Only then did we really pay attention to our finances - and realised that in two years we'd racked up debts of just under £25,000.
Tom was still fragile and I didn't want him in full-time childcare just so I could work. I decided to work from home for a franchise business magazine, Community Times.
I needed £5,000 and a computer to set things up, which meant borrowing even more money from my family.
Some people who have been in serious debt mess have been cleared via sound advice. For us, in two years, we've cleared every penny.
We've vowed never to get into that situation again. Now, we save each month for things like summer holidays rather than struggling at the last minute.

After getting advice and you are out of debt, the following tips would help manage your spending:

Think time, not money, when entertaining the children. Bike rides and muddy walks in the park don't cost a thing.
Buy treats in multi-packs rather than separately while out and about.
